Three to four times per year the planet Mercury moves into a retrograde motion, which makes it appear to be traveling backwards in its orbit. Of course no planet really moves backwards but only appears that way as we view its orbit from Earth.   In Roman mythology Mercury is known as the winged messenger who rules communication. Additionally he rules travel, the Internet and all electronic gadgets. When we are under a retrograde Mercury there are many things we need to be on the lookout for because this is not the best time to travel, have computer issues, make major purchases or expect decent communication within our closest relationships.

Since Mercury rules communication it also rules anything we communicate with.  Electronic gadgets will definitely take a hit during Mercury retrograde. If you encounter problems with your computer, printer, cellphone, smart phone, television, radio, iPad, iPod, hard drives, external hard drives or even warlike talkies, you can bet it had to do with the backward motion of Mercury. I know a woman whose computer crashes at every Mercury retrograde like clockwork. You can even time when it will happen.  She even went out a bought a Mac because she got tired of her computer crashing. Sure enough, the first Mercury retrograde after she put the Mac into service, it crashed. Not only do we experience issues with telecommunications electronics we can also have snafus with other major appliances like refrigerators, freezer, washers, dryers, alarm systems or the electrical system in the house itself. During Mercury retrograde it is a really good idea to make sure that you have everything backed up just in case there is a computer or hard drive crash to prevent your data from being lost forever.

Mercury retrograde can also affect things going wrong with our travel plans. Flights can be delayed or cancelled. If you flights actually go through your bags may not make it. It is important to check and double check your departure and arrival dates and times to make sure you have them down correctly so you don’t go the airport a day early. Also a good idea to pack some items in your carry on during Mercury retrograde just in case you checked luggage ends up in Timbuktu.

There are also more automobile accidents during Mercury retrograde. People just seem to be not as focused and drive more erratically than usual. I would not have believed it if I have not seen this many times myself. Since cars have many electronics they can also experience the same breakdowns in communication. For example, the windshield wipers may not work, the battery may die, and the AC or heater break, electronic windows my cease to work, the transmission may go out or the car computer may just go on the blink. Mercury retrograde can affect all of these items. Also if you are considering buying a new car, wait until the Mercury retrograde is over because you might miss something in the contract or may not understand something in the contract due to miscommunication or misunderstanding (of the communication in the contract). On the other hand, you may have just flat out purchased a lemon, which is quite possible during Mercury retrograde. It is important to remember though that this is not about deception or deceptive sales practice, but more about communication, communications systems and electronics in the car.

Mercury rules communication and with a retrograde Mercury, communication can come to a standstill. There are missed communications because cellphones, home phones, email systems, the Internet, Facebook and Twitter can have greater than usual technology breakdowns. Text messages get lost, Email systems go down. Facebook has a major technical glitch. The probability of communication going awry is significantly increased during these three weeks.  Most importantly, not only does Mercury retrograde affect communications technology but interpersonal communications are also affected. Use extra care with people who are close to you to ensure they understand what you are saying. Be very clear when you are explaining or expressing things to those around you. In romantic relationships it is not the best to time to create conflict, arguments or drama, as this will definitely make communication more complicated. If you find yourself wanting to fight with your significant other during Mercury retrograde time period, try to hold off until the retrograde is over so that it does not unnecessarily escalate into World War 3. The good news on that front is that if break ups do occur during a retrograde Mercury there is a very good chance of getting back together once the mystique of the backward planet has lifted.

Mercury retrograde is not the best time for outward communication, travel, making major purchases especially appliances, cars or houses, signing contracts, fighting with loved ones, trying to get loved ones to see your point of view, accept or start a job although interviewing seems to be ok, starting new projects, doing computer installations or upgrades, software installation or upgrades or putting your house up for sale. Mercury retrograde is a good time however to finish up incomplete projects, renew things around the house, renovate what needs to be renovated or reconnect with old friends you have not seen in a while. The bottom line is Mercury retrograde only lasts about three weeks, so it wont be like this forever.
